Using an English "speaking" app called "Instagram" since the last months I write in English every day.
The last three weeks I visited an English business class, eight-hour-education every day, and had to speak strictly in English.
It was okay and useful to speak in a better way, but I like my first language too much...

We talked a lot of about the "New English 2.0" in Business and that it is for Dutch Companies prevailing to use English as official language, even when there work only Dutch people, so I am astonished to hear about a German Company to work like this, even the Daimler-people talk in German!

English is our family language as my husband comes from New Zealand and still does not want to speak German. Our children grow up bilingual and attend bilingual schools.

Yesterday my oldest daughter told me that quite often when other kids in her class ask her what such and such a German word is in English she cannot translate it. I told her that's just simply because she does not translate like the others, she thinks in English! It's so normal to her that she would have never even thought about this.

 

I made the experience that it is even difficult if you are used to think in a different language. I had the problem during my time in Italy. Sometimes taking on the phone to my familiy in Austria I couldn't remember the words I wanted to use, specialy if they were words from the spoken language.

 

I have to use it on a daily basis (similar reason, international work environment, lots of non German speakers around).

Still we switch back to German whenever it is possible - you are always lacking things like subtlety, irony, "talk between the lines" and stuff if using a non native language.

 

Regarding this I have a short story I want to share with you:

I had lunch with some colleagues from Britain (one guy, 5 girls) and a (female) colleague from germany.The german colleague and I tried to explane the german phrase "Hahn im Korb". After a few minutes talking german about this my colleague said:

Bob, today you are the cock in the basket!

I think that wasn´t the correct translation as he looked like that and said: PLEASE, don´t talk about cocks by lunch.

Sorry for my bad english but 90% of the day I´m talking to Italian people so you need to use more "creative english".

My husband's Irish and he's speaking English with our son (I'm speaking German, so that he can benfit from both languages). We've got many English-speaking friends and family members and so English is a part of our daily life.

 

I learned Irish thirty years ago, but the only thing I remember to this day is how to say:
"Mary and Patrick are at the door. They are talking to each other."
Very useful phrase.
And of course "Slainte" and "Pog mo thoin".

 

I'm afraid he can't speak Gaeltacht. The only sentence he learned as a child was "Happy Saint Patrick's Day".

 

I´m using english just on facebook since a short time. I`m writing in an english-speaking group about a specific topic. Its not a intellectually topic, but it helps me to practice my english.

 

I'm not very good in english at all. Furthermore ist hate learning languages. The problem is, that I study psychology and the technical terminology in psychology is english. So I have no choice...

 

I am reading English books only and as I read a lot I somehow switch to thinking in English most of the time. And this really annoys me.

 

Reading and writing is not as good as spoken English, I just lo(u)ve the British accent, as well as the Scottish one. Just thinking of Ewan McGregor my heart is melting. Unbelievable sexy voice, as well as face.

caramella - I loved switching thoughts, nevertheless mostly it occurs to me only if I`m actually living in the country. That's quite funny, though!

 

no, I don't like it. Because I am not in an English environment so very often I do not find the right words...

I was once married to a Scotsman and - according to my friends - I spoke Scottish not English - which annoyed me as well.

 

Well, looking for words and not finding them isn't that funny, that's true. I prefer watching english movies, especially british productions. It reminds me of my time in England, which was a very funny period of my life.

Oho interesting, so in the end his sexy voice wasn't quite enough? Well, then I'll better keep my Scottish dreams locked in my head. In the long run - for sure - it's for the better.
